Victorian and early 20th Century Diaries of James Alex Browne – 2015

2015-07-17 10.08.14An important collection of Victorian and early 20th century diaries of James Alex Browne will be a a highlight for collectors of Victorian, social history and musical history at our Antiques & Collectors auction on July 25th and 26th. The diaries date from the 1860s until 1914 and recall major events of the period but also give an insight into the social history and culture of the time.

James Alex Browne (1838 – 1914) was born a year into Queen Victoria’s reign and the diaries we have start in the 1860s. James Alex Browne was Bandmaster in Royal Horse Artillery Band from 1870 – 1878, and later was the Founder and Editor of Surrey Musical Journal and the Joint Editor of British Musician. Entries in the diary mention events such as Prince Albert’s death, the Titanic and many references to social and cultural events. The diaries include many news cuttings, events cards, and post cards from the period.

We have only been through a small selection of the diaries and would advise any interested parties to arrange a viewing of this interesting piece of Victorian and cultural history.

Estimate: £600-£1000
