18th Century Swat Valley Dowry Chest – 2014

18th Century Swat Valley Dowry ChestA rare 18th Century Swat Valley Dowry Chest will be of interest to collectors at our 23rd and 24th August Antique & Collectors sale.

Swat is a valley in Pakistan. It is the upper valley of the Swat River, which rises in the Hindu Kush range. It is part of the Silk Road connecting China to the Mediterranean.

When Swati women get married, their clothing and household linens are carried in these chests in the bridal procession. These chests were used to store a wide variety of goods and supplies for the home.

This piece is made from sections which have been chopped rather than sawn and are held together with a simple system of joints. The carvings have been handed down over the centuries.

Estimate: £300-£500
