One of Largest Single Coin Collections Ever
Unique Auctions 26th February sale includes One of Largest Single Coin Collections Ever.
The collection of coins from an estate in the Midlands includes an amazing array of variety from Roman coins to modern day.
Coins include James I, James II, Elizabeth I, Henry III, Henry VII, Charles I, Gold Swiss coins, sovereigns, silver dollars, silver proof sets, silver proof ingots, and many specialist box sets and editions.
An unusual part of the collection is a bin containing 1/4 tonne of unsorted coins. We can only imagine that this collection took many decades to get to its current position. The bin was filmed by the BBC and by Unique Auctions being emptied. The collection is so vast that many lots are being added to the catalogue unsorted.
There is a special preview of the coins on Thursday 23rd February.

About Mouseman Robert Thompson
Robert (Mouseman) Thompson (7 May 1876 – 8 December 1955) was a British furniture maker. He lived in Kilburn, North Yorkshire, where he set up a business manufacturing oak furniture, which featured a carved mouse on almost every piece. It is claimed that the mouse motif came about accidentally in 1919 following a conversation about “being as poor as a church mouse”, which took place between Thompson and one of his colleagues during the carving of a cornice for a screen. This chance remark led to him carving a mouse and this remained part of his work from this point onwards.
He was part of the 1920s revival of craftsmanship, inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement led by William Morris, John Ruskin and Thomas Carlyle. More specific to furniture making in this genre and era include Stanley Webb Davies of Windermere.
The workshop, now being run by his descendants, includes a showroom and visitors’ centre, and is located beside the Parish Church, which contains “Mouseman” pews, fittings and other furniture. The company is now known as “Robert Thompson’s Craftsmen Ltd – The Mouseman of Kilburn.”
Fr Paul Nevill, a former Headmaster of Ampleforth College, asked Thompson to make the Ampleforth Abbey’s furniture; they liked it so much that Ampleforth kept asking Thompson for more works, including the library and most of the main building. Fr Gabriel Everitt, current Headmaster, has recently asked the Mouseman company for more work. Most of Ampleforth College houses are decorated with Robert Thompson’s furniture.
Others who continue in his style working in Yorkshire oak, have adopted similar identifying marks and nicknames, for example Thomas “Gnomeman” Whittaker (1910-1991), Colin “Beaverman” Almack, Wilf “Squirrelman” Hutchinson, “eagleman”, “beaverman” et al..

Flower study by Fantin-Latour brings a “bouquet of roses” to the market
Unique Auctions at Lincoln have once again been invited to market another rare and exceptional painting this time by Fantin-Latour. Ignace-Henri-Theodore Fantin-Latour 1836-1904 is the most celebrated 19th Century French painter of flower still lifes.
Although he was born in Grenoble, Fantin-Latour moved to Paris in 1841 and worked in the studio of Gustave Courbet where he developed his unique and much celebrated studies of flowers. He made frequent visits to England and became a lifelong friend and companion to the versatile painter James Whistler.
From 1862 many of his flower studies were shown at the Royal Academy and this picture, a study of roses, is typical of the fluency of his accomplished style of painting. It has been owned by the same family for three generations and is signed and dated by Latour in the artists unique manner.
Today his work is represented in many private collections and this picture will be of particular interest to connoisseurs of his work as it complements the few studies which have come to the market in the last few years. Based on recent sale room successes the estimate for this picture is £20,000 – £30,000.
Also in the same sale are two delightful studies by the French engraver and versatile draughtsman, Jaques Callot 1592 – 1635.
These studies illustrate his accomplishments in the mannerist style which was noted for combining grotesque and elegant elements in a compelling manner.
Certainly sought after by the connoisseur because of the advances he pioneered in copper plate engraving, these two studies are estimated at £500 – £600 each.
Other artists at the sale include: Robert Alexander Hillingford (1825-1904), H. Dunatti, E. Bennett, F. Holzen and H. E. Stephens.
The sale takes place on New Years Day, 1st January at 10am at Unique Auctions, Hillcroft Business Park, Whisby Road, Lincoln, LN6 3QT.
